Rabbi Avi Weiss: Reflections of an Activist and Visionary Rabbi

Rabbi Avi Weiss comes to the UK for a rare event in partnership with JOFA

Rabbi Avi Weiss, founding rabbi of The Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, has a distinguished career not only as a skilled congregational rabbi, but equally as an outspoken and uncompromising activist for social justice. In the 1980’s he was National Chairman of the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry (SSSJ), as well as National President of AMCHA – the Coalition for Jewish Concerns, raising a voice of moral conscience on behalf of the Jewish people and humankind throughout the world. In these roles Rabbi Weiss confronted, bigotry, racism and anti-Semitism. In the past decade he turned his attention to what he perceived as a narrowing of the Orthodox world and responded by founding two groundbreaking institutions; Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and Yeshivat Maharat to train male and female clergy to lead a more open and welcoming Orthodox Judaism. Rabbi Weiss’ efforts have not always made him popular, but even his most ardent opponents admire his commitment and devotion to his causes. In a ‘Desert Island Discs’ format Rabbi Weiss will be interviewed about his career, the choices he has made and his vision for the Jewish future. Don’t miss out on this rare event.
